Syracuse

The Persians was produced in this theatre a few years after its debut in Athens. It is the first revival of a play ever recorded.

Location: southeastern Sicily

Date: early 5th Cent. B.C. remodelled in 3rd Cent. B.C.

Capacity: 30,000, the largest theatre in the ancient world

Features: Orchestra was originally in shape of a trapazoid. Remodelled along lines of Athenian theatre in Hellenistic period.
